The Rex's Plumbing & Heating approach to frozen pipes:
Rex's Plumbing & Heating's frozen pipe Repair and Care Plan is a comprehensive approach to restoring your system and preventing future occurrences.

If you have NO or LOW water flow from your water faucets and Colorado is experiencing significantly cold temperatures, you may have a frozen pipe. Ice inside the pipe will restrict the flow of water.
If there is frost or visible ice buildup on exposed pipes (crawlspace areas, attic space, pipes on exterior walls, exterior hose bibs...) this is your clear sign the pipe(s) are frozen.
Frozen pipes make unusual sounds - popping, banging and cracking sounds. These sounds will be distinctive and can be loud within your home. When the ice expands within the pipe, the pipe can shift and bend putting pressure on the surrounding materials including wood and metal.
Bad or strange odors can become trapped when pipes freeze and if you notice sudden unusual smells from your pipes and drains it is time to have them inspected for potential freezing.

The first line of defense is keeping the temperature inside the home above freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit). At least 55 degrees is recommended and 68 degrees is preferred, especially if you will be away from the home. You want heat to circulate to the pipes in and near exterior walls, cabinets and crawlspaces and basements. Open cabinet doors - kitchen and bathroom, let the faucets drip in extremely cold weather to keep water flowing, and insulate exposed pipes. Your plumber will be able to assess your areas and make additional recommendations suited to your home.
Act immediately. Turn off the water supply to your home or business at the main shut-off valve and subsequently open the faucets to relieve any pipe pressure. Please do not use any open flames or electrical appliances to thaw your pipes as this poses fire and electrocution dangers all on their own. Please contact a professional plumber to safely assist in thawing your pipes and repairing or replacing any damage.
Same as above...Act immediately. If a frozen pipe bursts, shut off the main water supply valve and contact a plumber as soon as possible. Minimizing damage becomes the priority and avoiding structural damage, mold and mildew and other costly repairs is paramount.
