In Colorado, where snow runoff and heavy spring rains are common, sump pumps are the best defense against basement and crawlspace flooding commonly resulting in costly repairs and restoration work.
A sump pump is a submersible pump device installed in the lowest point of your basement or crawl space. The pump is designed to collect and remove any groundwater, seepage or excess water that may accumulate around your foundation during a heavy rain, fast snowmelt or unusually high groundwater levels.
A sump pump works by first collecting water in a sump pit - a hole in the lowest part of the basement or crawlspace. The sump pump sits in the sump pit and when water enters the pit, the pump is activated as the float switch rises with the rising water. The sump pump is activated and automatically begins pumping water away from your foundation through a discharge pipe - out and away from the home structure.

If water is slow to exit the sump pit or backs up to the limits of the pit, this could indicate a clogged discharge line or an undersized pump for the water intake situation.
