In Colorado, where snow runoff and heavy spring rains are common, sump pumps are the best defense against basement and crawlspace flooding commonly resulting in costly repairs and restoration work.
A sump pump is a submersible pump device installed in the lowest point of your basement or crawl space. The pump is designed to collect and remove any groundwater, seepage or excess water that may accumulate around your foundation during a heavy rain, fast snowmelt or unusually high groundwater levels.
A sump pump works by first collecting water in a sump pit - a hole in the lowest part of the basement or crawlspace. The sump pump sits in the sump pit and when water enters the pit, the pump is activated as the float switch rises with the rising water. The sump pump is activated and automatically begins pumping water away from your foundation through a discharge pipe - out and away from the home structure.

Rex's Plumbing & Heating will work with you to select the best sump pump system for your situation - a Pedestal or Submersible Sump Pump. We can provide a first-time installation or replace an aging or broken system. Our team will ensure a seamless installation process - start to finish.

If your basement or crawlspace has the slightest chance of flooding, investing in a sump pump holds significant value to the structural security of your home.
- Prevents basement and crawlspace flooding, reducing foundation and structural issues
- Reduces mold, mildew, fungus, and rot in your home, improving indoor air quality
- Protects your foundation, belongings, paint, wall coverings, trim, insulation, and basement appliances from corrosion and damages
- Preserves home value and may meet homeowner's insurance requirements
- Peace of Mind - Whether you are home or away and no matter the weather, your basement is protected from flooding concerns.

If there are signs and sounds of flooding, your sump pump is not working properly or is not working at all and needs to be repaired or replaced ASAP to mitigate damages to your home and belongings.
If you hear unusual sounds like grinding or rattling or hear the pump cycling on and off in quick succession, there may be issues with the motor, float switch or an electrical issue.
If the sump pump won't turn on at all the float switch could be malfunctioning, the pump could be clogged or rusted, or the unit may have an electrical issue.
If you can see rust or corrosion on the sump pump or any of its components this may indicate water damage to the unit and it will most likely affect the overall performance of the system.
If water is slow to exit the sump pit or backs up to the limits of the pit, this could indicate a clogged discharge line or an undersized pump for the water intake situation.
Any strong or significant odors from your basement or crawlspace could indicate mold, mildew or rot caused by excess moisture the sump pump isn't able to alleviate and repairs or upgrades to the sump pump system may be recommended.
There are multiple sump pump system options for your consideration. Rex's Plumbing & Heating and our team of seasoned, certified plumbers will assist you in making the best choice for your home, basement or crawlspace and budget.
A Pedestal Sump Pump is installed above the sump pit. The motor and impeller are positioned inside the pit. They are generally easy to access, maintain and repair but can produce more noise since the motor is located above.
Submersible Sump Pumps are installed inside the sump pit and the entire pump is submerged. These pumps are more powerful and can pump larger volumes of water more efficiently. They also tend to be quieter in the home.

With a routine maintenance schedule, a sump pump typically lasts between 7 and 10 years. Yearly inspection is highly recommended to ensure the pump remains in good working order when you need it most.
A sump pump system collects water in a sump pit and utilizes a motorized pump to automatically pump water out through a discharge line when a floatation switch is activated. The line directs the water away from the foundation of the home or building.
The sump pump switch turns the sump pump on and off depending on the level of the water in the sump pit and only turns on when necessary.
If you have experienced flooding in the past or live in an area where heavy rain or unpredictable groundwater levels are common, having a backup pump is recommended. A battery-powered or water-powered backup pump will also be useful should an electrical outage occur or the primary pump unexpectedly fail.
